DOs
~ Move them to a space that feels safe and closed rather than a busy street. A puppy needs to be near its mother to attain proper care and nursing.
~ Assess the health of the puppy for any signs of illness. They are highly sensitive and need to be vaccinated on time.
~ If there are no signs of the mother and you want to put it up for adoption, make sure the place is verified.
~ Make sure you take the puppy home with you only when you can dedicate the next 10+ years to it.
~ Raise awareness regarding adoption and fostering of stray dogs/puppies. Organize welfare programs.
~ Report against animal cruelty.
DONTs
~ Do not relocate a newborn puppy that you see on the streets away from its mother. Wait for its mother to come before you make the next move.
~ If the puppy seems healthy, do not send them to a shelter where sick dogs and puppies are sent as the immune system of this pup might not be able to fight the illnesses.
~ Try not to let a vaccinated pup get too close to a puppy who isn't fully vaccinated.
~ Do not invade the personal space of the puppies and their mothers. They tend to be very protective of their pups. Hence make sure you wait till you gain their trust.
~ Try not to have a large audience for a few months after the puppies are born as the mothers can tense it up.
~ Do not try to substitute first aid for veterinary care, it may help for the time being. You must make sure you get it properly checked by the vet.
~ Do not separate the newborn from its mother. That is also a period when they bond and need proper nursing.
